Brampton LED Retrofit: A Bright Idea with a Big Impact
December 2012
As we at Walmart Canada continue to look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, we’re excited to announce the realization of our first in-store LED lighting retrofit, implemented at the Brampton North supercentre. Completed by Canadian EcoLight LED Systems Corp., the retrofit involved changing close to 6,000 lamps from traditional 25-watt fluorescent lamps to 18-watt rated LED lights.
Unlike traditional fluorescent lights, high-efficiency LED lighting emits much less heat. As a result, this change reduces our strain on the energy grid by scaling back our usage significantly. In addition to these benefits, we will see reduced costs for air conditioning, re-lamping, and recycling, while also creating an improved shopping environment.
Our Brampton North customers now enjoy a much brighter store with lighting that mimics the installation of skylights. We’re thrilled to report that the feedback has been extremely positive from both store associates and customers alike, and with the success of this initiative, we’re now working towards making similar changes in other locations.
Walmart Canada is very proud to be the first large Canadian retailer to make this conversion. We’re passionate about operating responsibly and this project represents one of many steps we’re taking to make our stores less energy intensive as we work towards LED technology adaptation.
